Members of Fellowship Presbyterian Church welcome you!

Fellowship is not just a name but an attitude with our congregation, where all are welcome to come worship.

As we live out the calling of Jesus to be faithful in this community, we find ourselves challenged to go beyond beautiful words to discover the true meaning of the Spirit of Christ in our lives.

Our faith challenges us to welcome the stranger, support one another, serve those who are in need and to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

The activities of our church strive to equip people of all ages with a faith that will be able to meet the demands of our lives. We strive to teach our children and youth the ways of our Lord. We serve those in our community who are the outcast and in need. The love of Christ that we have discovered in our faith has given us a Spirit of commitment to one another, our families, our children and youth, the elderly and our community. Join us, for these are exciting times for our church.

Rev. Joel Long assumed duties as Interim Pastor of Fellowship Presbyterian Church on June 1, 2009.

Joel brings to Fellowship a wealth of experience, charisma and leadership ability.  Since earning his undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education from Lenoir Rhyne University (Hickory, NC) and his Master of Divinity Degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, Joel has served First Presbyterian Church (Quitman, GA), Mulberry Presbyterian and Sharon Presbyterian churches in Charlotte, NC and, most recently, First Presbyterian Church in Eden, North Carolina.

Joel is a member of Salem Presbytery where he serves on the Presbytery's Committee on Ministry.  He has also served as a commissioner to General Assembly.

Joel is the proud father of two sons, Preston (Cherryville, NC) and Zackary (Eden, NC) and the doting grandfather of Alexander, Dawson, Madison and Isabella.

Joel recently described himself as:

  • A loving dad and grandfather
  • Committed to proclaiming God’s Word
  • Coming to Fellowship with a great sense of excitement
  • Dedicated to sharing Christ’s redeeming love
  • A shepherd who cares
  • A golfer
  • Looking forward to growing together as disciples in Christ
  • Someone who loves mashed potatoes, country-style steak, English peas, and homemade biscuits.

When recently asked he further described himself as "...a little country and a little rock and roll".

Welcome, Rev. Joel Long!

Featured Outreach / Mission Emphasis

The concept of Creative Hearts and Hands was born in July 2001 -- the results of having read and article and finding the pattern for a turban in Guidepost magazine.  The resulting idea was simple, but powerful -- make turbans for cancer patients that had lost their hair due to chemo and distribute them to patients at local medical facilities.

What started with a single pattern soon transformed itself into the making of about 20 different hats from various commercial patters.  What started as the labor of love of one person has grown into a service of many that affects many more.

The number of styles of hats and turbans has decreased from a maximum of about 20 to 4 different styles because of time, manpower and effort required and due to the fact that the Regional Cancer Center soon asked if we could make bone shaped pillows to be used on chemo chairs.

This idea started small!  We initially thought the pillows would have to also have pillow cases, so we initially only made a dozen.  What we did not at the time realize was that the Regional Cancer Center intended that every patient have his or her own pillow!  What started as a simple idea -- a seed -- had grown into a huge tree, and it had happened virtually overnight.

What had started as an individual's project of love had grown into a project that was going to need organization and manpower -- the kind of project so well suited to Fellowship Presbyterian's mission and outreach programs.  That being the case, the name Creative Hearts and Hands was born.

So what's the current status of the program?

We make the bone pillows for the cancer center and deliver 125-150 pillows a month.

When we take 150 one bag of 25 pillows goes to Stoney Creek Cancer Center.

We make a rectangle shaped pillows used as cough pillows for The Women's Hospital and deliver 50 pillows a week to them.

We take care of the Christmas babies born at Women's Hospital. The first year it was 50 handmade little red gowns with matching hats. Every year since, it has been 50 fleece blankets with matching hats. This year it is something special but I can't reveal what it is at this time.

Creative Hearts and Hands has since 2001 made and donated 7,084 hats and 13,651 pillows and donated the Christmas items and some items the hospital has requested.

Nominating Committee Report

Please keep the Nominating Committee in your prayers as they prepare the slate of names for our Pastor Nominating Committee.

It is our hope to have a Congregational Meeting in August to elect the persons who will search for our new pastor.

Once they are elected there’s a host of work to be done before the actual process begins. They will begin meeting with the Transition Team to complete the Mission Study and prepare a Church Information Form to present to possible candidates

Please know that your Transition Team continues to meet and prepare ourselves for the preparation of the mission study and Church information Form as a result of gathering our survey results.

Also, we will be completing an initial report of our small group meetings to be shared with you, the congregation, by the end of July.

Remember, the most important thing you can be doing is praying that God will lead us to right person to lead and shepherd our wonderful congregation.

Peace,
The Transition Team
